More than 200 Mesquite ISD and area volunteers will host a morning of free family fun from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the ReadPlayTalk Fair on Saturday, March 24. The second annual event will take place at Mesquite High School, 300 E. Davis Street in Mesquite.

A wide range of activities are planned for toddlers to elementary school age and their family members  and will show engaging ways to read, play and talk to children from birth.

“Teaching parents, grandparents, guardians, friends and our entire community fun ways to engage the little ones in their lives in reading, playing and talking is one of the major initiatives of Mesquite ISD,” said Superintendent Dr. David Vroonland. “The goal of our ReadPlayTalk Initiative is for all students in our district by 2020 to be on grade level reading by third grade. According to research, reaching this milestone makes a student four times more likely to graduate high school."

Here are some of the activities and giveaways to look forward to and enjoy next Saturday:

  • Poteet High School theatre students dressed up as storybook characters
  • Local celebrities (police officers, firefighters and more) hosting read-alouds for the children
  • Math activities
  • Alphabet activities
  • Tattoo booth (child friendly, temporary tattoos)
  • Gym activities sponsored by ASI Gymnastics
  • Musical activities including instrument “petting zoo”
  • Cheers led by Mesquite High’s squad
  • Snow cones
